Probiotics and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
If you haven’t yet heard about how probiotics and ibs could be related then it could be very fortunate that you stumbled on this website!
IBS — Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and other digestive problems such as acid reflux, indigestion, Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Crohn’s Disease (Irritable Bowel Disease — IBD) are all on the rise. Every year more people are incapacitated by the symptoms of IBS, or by other acute or chronic digestive illnesses.
Why is this?
Well, the answer to that is complex — and tends to elicit the stock response from many doctors and professionals, that is: “…we don’t fully understand what causes these digestive problems”… and insofar as the causes of IBS and other gut problems can be many and various and diagnosis can vary from person to person, this rather unhelpful retort can be said to be true… BUT…
What many sufferers, seeking relief from irritable bowel symptoms, and the symptoms of acid reflux or other stomach disorders, are finding is that self-help can be a great boon. Indeed it could be said to be a must. For to be blunt the medical establishment are constantly encouraged to resort to drug based treatments for your illness… it’s a little matter of profit! But drugs have all too often proven to have little positive effect, and sometimes they can cause more side-effects and problems than they ultimately cure!
But what about probiotics? You may have heard the term bandied about a lot in the media and via advertising. How many people do not know of those little pots of fermented milk that contain a dash of probiotic ‘good bacteria’ to ‘improve gut health’? Not many I should think! But how effective are these ‘nutriceuticals’… another blunt answer I’m afraid… NOT VERY!
In fact probiotic yogurts and mini-pot drinks may even prove worse than taking nothing as they typically contain pasteurized milk products, which can be a cause of digestive uspet for many people who cannot digest ‘lactose’ anyway! So the pitifully small amount of probiotic these (usually over-priced) products contain, will have little or no chance of having any real effect…
That said probiotics, or ‘good bacteria’ as the marketing men prefer to call them, might indeed hold the key to improved gut health, the stopping of digestive pain, and the end of IBS for many people. And I speak as one of those people who went through years of tests, mountains of pills and little relief — until I discovered an effective, natural probiotic product that began my road to recovery (but more about that later, I don’t want to bore you straight away
)!
If you suffer bouts of stomach pain, regular unexplained upset stomachs, bouts of diarrhea perhaps alternating with constipation, frequent acid stomach and possible acid reflux symptoms that keep you up at night padding around looking for antacids… then you should seriously investigate the benefits of probiotics for IBS or other digestive ill-health.
The common aspect of all digestive ailments is of course that the digestive tract is ‘impaired’. That long muscular tube is the only way we can absorb necessary nutrients form our food and if it “ain’t working” properly then we not only suffer nutritionally, we can potentially go on to develop a myriad of possible more comples health issues — some of which can be life limiting and affect our quality of life, some can even be ‘life shortening’ and deadly serious!
It is imperative then that we fight back against the many ways, means and methods that ‘modern life’ adversley affects our guts! We have to find a way to support our digestive health, and get our systems working normally — you’ll be surprised how many other ‘little ailments’ stop bothering you when your IBS symptoms and/or acidity problems are resolved… And one thing that can help to address the unhealthy state of your colon is to re-populate it with good bacteria, naturally, by using probiotic supplements… but of course there is more to that than meets the eye. There’s much to tell, but we will be covering more of this in future articles…
Indeed we’ll be featuring article, advice, tips, links, resources and more here that you may wish to try. To state the obvious (perhaps) and to make the normal disclaimer:
